Who is Jonathan David? And Why Manchester United and Arsenal have been linked to the 20 year old… David has had an impressive start to his career in Belgium with Gent and this has led to some of the top Premier League sides looking at the young Canadian star.

The Brooklyn-born forward was scouted by KAA Gent straight from Ottawa Internationals soccer club, and has since impressed in the Belgian First Division & for his international side, Canada.

He moved to Gent in January 2018 before making his full team debut in the second game of the 2018/19 season, coming on as a substitute before netting an equaliser against Zulte Waregem in the 95th minute! He made his European debut five days later in a Europa League qualifier against Jagiellonia Białystok, again as a substitute and again scoring a decisive goal, this time the winner in the 85th minute. His first professional season in Belgium’s top flight saw David directly involved in 19 goals in just 43 appearances but where does he play?

As you could guess from his attacking returns, Jonathan David is an attacker. In Gent’s 4-3-1-2, he plays either at number 10 or in the front two as a second striker.

Regardless of his positioning, David’s movement is excellent moving vertically and horizontally in equal measure to either come off the line, surge past the forwards or move wide to exploit space. He’s got a real understanding of space and he looks to exploit it where possible. This tends to determine the positions he frequently takes up but as a striker, he seems to have a preference for moving into the channels, which suits his pace, excellent counter attacking play and finishing ability off both feet.

Porto have reportedly already had a 25 million euro bid rejected for David, with Gent determined to keep their current squad together, for another season at least. After that who knows what’s next but I’d love to see him reach his target of playing in the Premier League, ideally for Manchester United. Imagine him at the tip of a diamond behind Marcus Rashford and Martial with Bruno Fernandes playmaking from deeper in midfield  fire.

Who do you think Jonathan David will join Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal or Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Man United?
